Today we will look at poems by Martin Espada, Adrienne Rich, and Langston Hughes.
Writing Exercise 1:
After reading through the Martin Espada poems, read through again marking lines, words, and phrases that stand out to you. (Shoot for at least 10.) Choose one of those phrases to write a poem from. This should utalize vivid imagery but can go in any direction (subject or form) that you choose.
Writing Exercise 2:
After reading the poems by Adrienne Rich and Langston Hughes, think about how you identify yourself in society and in your various roles. How do people describe you? How do you describe/identify yourself. Write a poem that reflects on your own social identity.
